It's a way to put several people's connections on one account so you manage and pay for them together. In practice that takes a few forms: a shared postpaid family plan, where multiple SIMs share a data pool and unlimited calls on one bill; a coordinated multi-SIM prepaid setup, where you manage several prepaid numbers together; add-a-member SIMs, where extra family members join an existing account for a small add-on fee; and convergence bundles, which fold mobile, home broadband and DTH into a single household bill. The goal is fewer bills, easier management, and usually a lower cost per person than everyone holding fully separate plans.

Usually, but not always, which is why the per-member maths matters. When several people genuinely use a shared data pool and unlimited calls, splitting one plan between them typically costs less per head than separate individual plans, and you get one bill instead of many. The exception is a very light user — a grandparent who mostly calls, or a child on a basic phone — for whom a cheap prepaid SIM of their own can be less than their share of a big family plan. It genuinely saves and simplifies if you'd pay for mobile, broadband and DTH anyway. The trade-off is that you tie the whole household to one provider for everything, so it's worth checking that provider is strong on all three — especially broadband and coverage in your area — before you commit. Family plans make it easier to look after younger members' connections. Depending on the operator and your phone, you can set data limits so a child doesn't burn through the shared pool, enable safe or filtered browsing, restrict certain content, and use screen-time controls on the device itself. Some operators offer family safety features tied to the account, and Android and iOS both have built-in parental controls that work alongside any plan. The point is that a family plan can keep children connected and reachable while giving you sensible guardrails.
